Hamilton, ON – The Guelph Gryphons are returning to the Baggataway Cup Final for the second year in a row to take another shot at the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association’s championship. They were dominant in their 12-7 victory over the Trent University Excalibur.

The Gryphons led by as many as seven goals in the third quarter when they were up 10-3. Although the Excalibur had a late surge in the fourth quarter, scoring four quick goals, the team from Guelph dug deep and scored two insurance goals to finish off the game.

Guelph’s scoring was lead by Jason Mainer who had three goals and two assists. Mainer also stood out for Guelph last season in the Baggataway Cup final against Brock University.

Trent’s Josh Wasson was one of the strongest players on the field, taking face-offs and leading the Excalibur in scoring with four goals and one assist.

Both teams battled through the rain and cold that had crept over Ron Joyce Stadium shortly after the first semi-final game between McGill University and Brock University. Despite the weather, the crowd stayed energetic and loud throughout the game.

The University of Guelph Gryphons will play the McGill University Redmen tomorrow in McMaster University’s Ron Joyce Stadium at 1:00 PM for the Canadian University Field Lacrosse Association’s championship, the Baggataway Cup.
